Tamerlane Bey: Artist

Artist Bio: Who I Am

Tamerlane Bey,  local artist & business owner, appeared on the scene in Orlando, Fl. in the Fall of 2000. Born in Brooklyn and raised in East Harlem, this native New Yorker brings a wealth of creative experience in both applied and performance art. “Art is what I do best’. Whether it is performing on stage in front of the masses or by myself with a paint brush and ‘reality glasses’, I love it all",  says the Waterford Lakes resident who’s early works have appeared in the Children’s Museum of Manhattan, East Harlem Performing Arts School, the City Hall Children’s Exhibit (Brooklyn), Harlem Children’s Theater Company, and the Schick Art Gallery (Saratoga Springs, NY).  As a youth growing up in ‘the city’, Tamerlane was exposed to lots of creativity on various levels all of which helped to fashion his love and enthusiasm for the arts.

At age five, he first began to discover the wonders of finger painting! It was during this time he recalls making a ‘mess’ and not being scolded for it. Moreover, he received excellent grades from his teachers and praises from his peers. As a frequent traveler of the ‘museum mile’, Tamerlane continued to develop his artistic and academic aptitude in fine & performance art. As a member of the ‘Harlem Children’s Theater Company’, he decided to pursue an extra curricular music hobby and became the popular street rapper, ‘MC STARCHILD’ which eventually landed him and his brother, Kasiem, a recording contract with Blue Chip Recording, Ltd., in the UK, as ‘The Together Brothers’. Before leaving New York however, he was also a member of the repeat champions, ‘East Harlem Chargers’ youth football team. As a valued athlete, the artist hand-painted lighting bolts on each helmet at the coach’s request. This gave the team distinction as the ‘black & gold’ dominated on football fields throughout the Tri-State area with Tamerlane as a running back and a member of the special teams’ unit.
Activity was the key to his early successes as he continued to evolve as a creative talent. With the love, support, and tenacity of a caring mother (Mary Bey), Tamerlane added yet another activity to his busy agenda; he joined the Boys’ Club of New York (Jefferson Park/ 111th street 1st ave.) where he eventually received a full academic scholarship to attend Holderness School, located in Plymouth, New Hampshire. At this college ‘prep’ school, he continued to excel in all areas, scholastic, academic, and social. The later proved a little tough at first being one of the only minority students in attendance coming right out of ‘Spanish Harlem’; however, he never gave up nor backed down from the challenges at hand. He was determined to be the best he could be and as a result graduated on the dean’s list, was the ‘Friends of the Arts’ regional winner, received the highest art award from Holderness School at graduation, was the varsity football & basketball co-captain, an esteemed floor leader, and a mentor & friend to classmates under classmen alike.
With big aspirations and multiple talents, Tamerlane applied to The Maryland Art Institute, Rhode Island School of Design, Harvard, and Yale School for art, and Skidmore College. He was immediately accepted into the latter and decided to remain in New York where he would be closer to his family & friends. Afterwards, he discovered that he also was accepted into all the institutions for which he applied!  At Skidmore, he chose art as his major and received a Bachelor of Science degree with a concentration in graphics. During his tenure, Tamerlane continued to paint and was highly sort after for his talents as a proven artist. His commissioned works began to increase in number with each client referral.

Today, his works continues to inspire art lovers who appreciate the vitality and diversity inherent in his compositions. Realistic to abstract, Tamerlane’s capabilities are limitless. He has remained true to his craft and it shows in each and every piece he creates. His artistry is definitely worth the investment. His keen sense of color, line, proportion, and attention to detail makes Tamerlane outstanding in his field and certainly one to watch.
